The e-bike industry is the first transportation group that worked together to establish a battery recycling solution, reducing negative waste impacts on our climate and on our planet.Join Call2Recycle to learn more about the e-bike battery recycling program, and how your shop can enroll to join 1,800+ already-participating collection sites. Help us “lead the charge” by offering safe and compliant e-bike battery recycling.

Session Description:
With e-bike sales surpassing those of electric vehicles last year, e-bike rebate programs are burgeoning in the United States. On Earth Day of 2022, the city of Denver launched its e-bike rebate program, allocating $300K for the initiative. By the end of the year, the city distributed over 4,700 vouchers totaling $5 million dollars for e-bike purchases; half of those vouchers went to income-qualified residents. Hear from the City and County of Denver and some of its key partners about the program’s success, and how you can advocate for e-bike rebate programs in your community.

The chemistry of lithium-ion batteries is groundbreaking in energy-storage technology, enabling the development and commercialization of clean electric vehicles and e-bikes. There are, however, environmental and health-safety risks associated with the uncontrolled release of the stored energy within these batteries. In this session, we’ll discuss how and why Li-ion batteries fail, and how consumers and businesses can take precautions in battery charging, storage, and use.

Patrick Hogan serves as the Senior Research Manager for PeopleForBikes. Before working in the bicycle industry, Patrick’s research encompassed outdoor activities such as wildlife viewing, fishing, hunting, and target shooting. At PeopleForBikes, Patrick manages all efforts to identify and analyze bicycle industry sales trends, understand trends in bicycle participation and perception, and connect the dots among great places to ride, industry growth, and other economic benefits. When he’s not synthesizing data, he can usually be found hauling his daughter in a Burly trailer behind his gravel bike on Denver-area trails.
