The e-bike industry is the first transportation group that worked together to establish a battery recycling solution, reducing negative waste impacts on our climate and on our planet.Join Call2Recycle to learn more about the e-bike battery recycling program, and how your shop can enroll to join 1,800+ already-participating collection sites. Help us “lead the charge” by offering safe and compliant e-bike battery recycling.

Maggie supports daily program operations and amplifies the e-bike program to create a turnkey experience for manufacturers, retailers, and riders. She is a dedicated urban utility and mountain bike rider with over a decade of experience in environmental services and not-for-profit programming

Rebecca Resman (she/her) is the Manager of Sales & Partnerships at Po Campo Bike Bags, a woman-owned company that specializes in bike bags that are stylish, functional, and sustainable. She is also the Founder of Chicago Family Biking, a group that supports thousands of cycling families across Chicago through education, advocacy and community building events.

Amber (she/her) has 15 years of bike industry experience, working as a service tech, a shop manager, and – most recently – an Inside Sales Rep for Tern Bicycles. She actively supports her local bike community by hosting group rides and volunteering at local events. Amber also races on a cycling team for femme, women, transgender, and non-binary athletes that encourages participants of marginalized identities to be in competitive cycling. She believes all cyclists should feel comfortable and empowered, whether in their local bike shop or at a starting line.

Session Description:

With e-bike sales surpassing those of electric vehicles last year, e-bike rebate programs are burgeoning in the United States. On Earth Day of 2022, the city of Denver launched its e-bike rebate program, allocating $300K for the initiative. By the end of the year, the city distributed over 4,700 vouchers totaling $5 million dollars for e-bike purchases; half of those vouchers went to income-qualified residents. Hear from the City and County of Denver and some of its key partners about the program’s success, and how you can advocate for e-bike rebate programs in your community.

Stephen Frothingham is the editor-in-chief of Bicycle Retailer & Industry News, aka BRAIN. Since 1992, he’s been a journalist for several daily newspapers, the Associated Press, and VeloNews, and has been in his second stint at BRAIN since 2012. Steve worked at bike shops during his college years in New Hampshire and New Mexico, and currently enjoys cycling around his home in Boulder, CO. He looks forward to integrating an e-bike into his lifestyle.

Ian Harwick

Office of Climate Action, Sustainability, and Resiliency City and County of Denver

Ian works for the City of Denver in the Office of Climate Action, Sustainability & Resiliency, and has been a staunch advocate for cycling, rolling, walking, transit, and adaptive mobility for the last 20 years. He is actively involved in the Athmar Park Neighborhood Association, Denver’s YIMBY, and the New Leaders Council. Ian joined the Regional Transit District (RTD) in January 2023 after a write-in campaign. His prior work includes the DDPHE, the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner, and a small consulting business.

Steve Pribyl is the owner of SloHi Bike Co in Denver, CO. He graduated from Michigan Tech with a Masters in Engineering, thriving outside of the classroom with mountain- and road-cycling rides. After spending 5 years in mechanical engineering, he moved to Denver in 2017 and began working in bike mechanics. At SloHi, he became the go-to mechanic for e-bike service, and for advising customers on how to carry groceries, people, or strange objects on their bikes.

Robbie Hobein has loved traveling by self-propelled wheels since her first little red tricycle – enjoying acoustic ride-share with her siblings in wagons and Big Wheels. She is an active, multi-modal transportation evangelist, enthusiastically riding, walking and scooting all around the Denver metro area, mostly via Urban Arrow e-cargo family-kit bicycle, and internationally whenever possible. She is currently a Solutions Engineer for Splunk, after earning an Executive MBA from the University of Denver and teaching band and orchestra for fourteen years. Bicycling sets you free!

Session Description:

The chemistry of lithium-ion batteries is groundbreaking in energy-storage technology, enabling the development and commercialization of clean electric vehicles and e-bikes. There are, however, environmental and health-safety risks associated with the uncontrolled release of the stored energy within these batteries. In this session, we’ll discuss how and why Li-ion batteries fail, and how consumers and businesses can take precautions in battery charging, storage, and use.

Mike Fritz started his career at Schwinn in 1973, and has since held engineering and senior management positions at several major eBike brands. In 1997, he was recruited by Lee Iacocca as the VP of Product Development for EV Global Motors. He has served as VP of Engineering and Chief Technology Officer for eBike propulsion systems companies, and as the North American Technical Representative for a major eBike battery pack supplier. Over the past 10 years, he has worked as a technical consultant to the bicycle industry.

Tobie DePauw is the Senior Digital Product Manager for PeopleForBikes’ Ride Spot platform. His ~20 years in the bike industry includes experience in bicycle retail, event promotion, marketing, and community building.

Patrick Hogan serves as the Senior Research Manager for PeopleForBikes. Before working in the bicycle industry, Patrick’s research encompassed outdoor activities such as wildlife viewing, fishing, hunting, and target shooting. At PeopleForBikes, Patrick manages all efforts to identify and analyze bicycle industry sales trends, understand trends in bicycle participation and perception, and connect the dots among great places to ride, industry growth, and other economic benefits. When he’s not synthesizing data, he can usually be found hauling his daughter in a Burly trailer behind his gravel bike on Denver-area trails.

Rachel Fussell is the eMTB Policy & Program Manager with PeopleForBikes. Prior to this role, Rachel served as Executive Director of a mountain bike trail organization in Vermont, where she built connections and community in support of local biking opportunities. Her passion for the outdoors and all things bikes inspires her work as an advocate for anyone looking to enjoy the benefits of pushing pedals.

Ash Lovell

Dr. Ashley (Ash) Lovell is the Electric Bicycle Policy and Campaign Director for PeopleForBikes. She holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Sociology, and specializes in collaborative decision-making. Ash has worked with the National Park Service, the US Forest Service, and multiple environmental organizations to tackle issues of climate change, shared land management, and sustainability. At PeopleForBikes, Ash leads initiatives that include the e-bike safety task force; the e-bike battery recycling program; federal, state and local lobbying for pro-bike legislation; and engagements with regulatory agencies. Outside of work, Ash enjoys riding around the Front Range on her electric cargo bike with her two little boys in tow.
